A Day in the Life

Deliver primary healthcare, disease prevention, maternal and child health services, and health education to communities in Sri Lanka as a Public Health Midwife (PHM) or Field Health Officer under the Ministry of Health.

  • Conduct home visits for antenatal and postnatal mothers
  • Perform newborn and infant health assessments
  • Administer immunizations under the National Immunization Programme
  • Conduct preschool and school health screening programs
  • Manage communicable disease surveillance (dengue, COVID, TB)
  • Facilitate family planning counseling and services
  • Record and report public health data to MOH office
  • Conduct community health education programs

Community-based fieldwork across a designated MOH area (Public Health Midwife covers ~1,500 families). Mix of home visits, clinic days, and community programs. Rural and urban community settings. Works closely with Medical Officer of Health (MOH).

Field-based role with daily home visit schedule. Some flexibility in planning daily activities within MOH area. Rural postings can involve longer travel times. Disease outbreak periods require extra effort.
