About This Role
Develops and quality-controls coconut-derived products — desiccated coconut (DC), virgin coconut oil (VCO), coconut milk, coconut cream, coconut water, and coconut shell-based activated carbon. Sri Lanka is the world's largest DC exporter. Key employers: Renuka Agri Foods (Wattala), Cargill Lanka (coconut), Haycarb PLC (activated carbon), Coconut Research Institute (CRI).
A Day in the Life
Develop and optimise coconut-based food and industrial products (coconut oil, desiccated coconut, coconut water, coconut milk, coir) at processing companies in Sri Lanka's Kurunegala, Puttalam, and Gampaha coconut triangle.
- Develop new coconut-based food product formulations (coconut flour, coconut sugar, MCT oil)
- Optimise existing production processes for coconut oil extraction and refining
- Conduct quality control testing at processing line (moisture, FFA, peroxide value)
- Evaluate raw coconut quality at intake and determine processing routes
- Prepare product specifications and technical data sheets for export customers
- Trial new equipment for virgin coconut oil or coconut water processing
- Ensure compliance with SLSI and SLS certification for coconut products
Work Environment
Food processing laboratory and production floor at coconut processing companies in Colombo, Kurunegala, or Kuliyapitiya. Combines lab work with production line monitoring.
Typical hours: 47h/week · WLB score 7/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Office and lab hours with structured schedule. Production deadlines can create pressure but overall good balance.
