About This Role
First step on the Chartered Accountant pathway under ICASL (Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka). Trainees sign a 3-year apprenticeship agreement with a registered training office (Big 4, mid-tier, or CA Sri Lanka office). Earns a training stipend while studying CA Sri Lanka Business Level and Corporate Level exams. The gold standard of Sri Lankan professional finance qualifications.
A Day in the Life
Complete the mandatory practical training period at a CA Sri Lanka accredited firm, performing audit fieldwork, financial statement preparation, and tax work under a supervising Chartered Accountant.
- Conduct audit testing — vouching, tracing, and analytical procedures on client files
- Prepare working papers documenting audit evidence and conclusions
- Assist in drafting financial statements under SLFRS and LKAS
- Prepare tax computations for income tax and VAT returns
- Attend client meetings with supervising CA and take notes
- Prepare bank reconciliations, debtors schedules, and fixed asset registers
- Study for CA Sri Lanka professional examinations while working
Work Environment
Big Four or mid-tier audit firm office in Colombo (Colombo 3/7) with client site visits. Structured training environment with clear supervision hierarchy.
Typical hours: 50h/week · WLB score 4/10 · COMMON overtime
Notoriously demanding during audit busy seasons (December–March for Dec year-end clients). Trainees often work 60+ hour weeks. Compensated by the prestige and career value of the qualification.
