Water Quality Specialist (Hatchery)
This role is for highly dedicated individuals passionate about aquatic life and meticulous in their work. It offers the unique reward of nurturing delicate fish larvae to maturity, but demands constant vigilance, quick problem-solving under pressure, and the ability to work irregular hours in a specialized environment.”
About This Role
Managing the chemical balance of water (pH, Ammonia, DO) for sensitive fish larvae.
A Day in the Life
A Water Quality Specialist (Hatchery) dedicates their day to meticulously managing the delicate chemical balance of water in fish hatcheries. This involves continuous monitoring of parameters like pH, ammonia, dissolved oxygen, and temperature, and promptly adjusting conditions to ensure the survival and healthy development of sensitive fish larvae and fry.
- Conducting daily water quality tests for pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, dissolved oxygen, and temperature.
- Monitoring fish larvae and fry for signs of stress, disease, or abnormal behavior.
- Adjusting water parameters through aeration, filtration, water changes, or chemical treatments.
- Maintaining and calibrating water quality testing equipment and hatchery systems.
- Recording and analyzing water quality data to identify trends and potential issues.
- Implementing biosecurity protocols to prevent disease introduction and spread.
- Collaborating with aquaculture technicians and veterinarians on fish health management.
- Ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and best aquaculture practices.
Work Environment
Works primarily indoors within a hatchery facility, which is often humid, well-lit, and can be noisy due to pumps and aeration systems. Requires constant vigilance and quick response to changes in water parameters.
Typical hours: 48h/week · WLB score 5/10 · REGULAR overtime
Hatcheries often operate 24/7, requiring shift work, including nights, weekends, and public holidays. Critical periods for larval development demand constant monitoring.
