Underwriter (Specialized)
Specialty underwriting is the most technically prestigious career track in insurance. A specialist underwriter evaluates risks that generalists cannot — the FPSO vessel off Sri Lanka's coast, the D&O exposure of a listed company board, the cyber risk of a digital bank. In a world of automated personal line underwriting, specialty human judgment becomes more valuable, not less. Lloyd's of London accreditation and Singapore market relationships open genuinely international career pathways from a Sri Lankan specialty underwriting foundation.”
About This Role
Evaluates complex financial or property risks to determine the terms and conditions of insurance coverage.
A Day in the Life
A Specialist Underwriter focuses on a specific and technically demanding insurance line that requires deep domain expertise — common specialisations in Sri Lanka include marine cargo/hull underwriting, engineering insurance, directors and officers (D&O) liability, cyber insurance, and professional indemnity. Unlike a general underwriter, a specialist develops deep technical knowledge of a particular risk class that enables underwriting of complex, high-value, and non-standard risks that require expert judgment beyond general underwriting guidelines.
- Underwrite complex risks in specialist line requiring technical domain expertise
- Evaluate specialist risk factors specific to the line (cargo routes, engineering project specs, D&O governance)
- Develop and maintain specialist underwriting guidelines and rating frameworks
- Handle facultative reinsurance placement for risks exceeding treaty capacity
- Provide technical underwriting training to generalist colleagues
- Participate in product development for new specialist insurance lines
- Monitor claims trends in specialist portfolio and adjust underwriting accordingly
- Represent the company in specialist broker relationships (Lloyd's brokers, international specialists)
Work Environment
Specialist underwriters work in technically demanding roles that often involve international counterparts — London Lloyd's market brokers, Singapore specialty underwriters, and global risk managers. In Sri Lanka, specialist underwriting roles exist in marine (for port and trade-related risks), engineering (infrastructure projects), and growing D&O/PI lines as corporate governance standards improve.
Typical hours: 45h/week · WLB score 7/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Specialist underwriting maintains good work-life balance with predictable hours. Complex risk assessment periods require deeper focus but not sustained overtime. International broker calls may require some time zone flexibility.
