Telecom technician

MEDIUM DemandLOW AI RiskGROWING in SL

Telecom technicians are building the digital infrastructure that every Sri Lankan increasingly depends on. With fibre broadband rollout and 5G deployment accelerating, the demand for skilled field technicians is growing. The role offers variety — from residential broadband installations to underground manhole cable repairs — and a clear pathway to sub-contracting or network engineering. For those who want a modern technical field career with overseas potential and strong domestic demand, telecom technology is an excellent choice.

A Day in the Life

Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots telecommunications infrastructure in Sri Lanka — including mobile network equipment, fixed-line copper and fibre cables, broadband CPE, and enterprise communication systems.

  • Install and commission broadband CPE (routers, ONTs, modems) at residential and business premises
  • Carry out fault rectification on fibre and copper access network — identify break, splice, or connector fault
  • Climb telecommunication poles or access underground manholes to repair cable faults
  • Install and configure enterprise voice systems — IP-PBX, SIP trunks, VoIP handsets
  • Test signal quality on fibre links using OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer)
  • Install CCTV, structured cabling, and network patching in commercial premises
  • Complete field work orders on CMMS mobile app — update job status and test results
  • Escalate unresolved network faults to NOC (Network Operations Centre) with full fault detail

Work Environment

FIELDTeam: SMALLUNIFORMRemote: NONE

Field-based role covering geographic zones across Sri Lanka. Telecom technicians travel extensively — residential premises, commercial buildings, telecom manholes, roadside poles, and remote tower sites. Employers include Dialog Axiata, Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT), Hutch, and their subcontracted field force companies. The role requires comfort with outdoor and confined-space work, working at height on poles and towers, and autonomous problem-solving without engineer support on site.

Typical hours: 48h/week · WLB score 5/10 · COMMON overtime

Irregular hours driven by customer appointment scheduling and network fault emergency response. On-call rosters for fault restoration are common in operator field teams.

Job Security (SL)

HIGH

Physical cable installation, fibre splicing, and on-site fault finding require skilled human technicians. Remote network monitoring reduces truck rolls but not skilled fieldwork.

Burnout Causes

Irregular hours and on-call fault responsePhysical outdoor work in heat and rainHigh job volume targets in operator field force teams

Physical Health Risks

Falls from poles and laddersWorking in confined manholes — asphyxiation riskSun exposure during outdoor cable installationRepetitive strain from cable pulling and splicing

Mental Health Risks

Pressure from SLA (Service Level Agreement) targets for fault restorationCustomer-facing pressure when services are down for business clients

How to Mitigate

  • Always use safety belt and lanyard when climbing poles
  • Test for gas before entering manholes
  • Obtain fibre splicing and OTDR certification to improve earning and overseas mobility
  • Develop CCNA skills to unlock NOC and engineering career pathways
