Technical Writer

Technical Writing is for people who love technology and writing in equal measure — who find satisfaction in taking something complex and making it clear. The role offers exceptional remote work potential and good SL export income. However, be clear-eyed about the AI disruption: routine documentation is already being automated. Senior technical writers who own developer experience, information architecture, and specialised regulated documentation will remain highly valued. Others must adapt.

About This Role

Translates complex technical information into clear manuals, guides, and documentation for end-users.

A Day in the Life

You create clear, accurate, and user-friendly technical documentation — including user manuals, API references, how-to guides, release notes, and developer docs — that helps users and engineers understand complex products and systems.

  • Research and understand technical products, systems, or processes through SME interviews and hands-on testing
  • Write user guides, API documentation, release notes, and technical how-to articles
  • Maintain and update existing documentation for product changes and new releases
  • Structure documentation in a docs-as-code workflow (Markdown, Git, static site generators)
  • Work with engineering, product, and design teams to gather accurate technical information
  • Review documentation for accuracy, clarity, and consistency with style guides
  • Create diagrams, screenshots, and video walkthroughs to supplement written content
  • Manage the documentation portal (Confluence, ReadMe, Docusaurus, or equivalent)

Work Environment

Collaborative product or engineering team environment. In Sri Lanka, technical writers work primarily at software companies (WSO2, IFS, Virtusa, 99x), BPO/KPO operations, and engineering consultancies. Many SL technical writers work remotely for international clients.

Typical hours: 42h/week · WLB score 8/10 · RARE overtime

Generally excellent work-life balance. Release cycles create occasional deadline pressure but this role rarely demands sustained overtime.

Market Outlook

STABLE

Stable demand from Sri Lanka's software product companies (WSO2, IFS, 99x, Virtusa). Many SL technical writers work for international clients remotely — this expands the effective market significantly. AI tools are reducing demand for routine documentation but increasing demand for high-quality, specialised technical writers.

Job Security (SL)

MEDIUM

LLMs (GPT-4, Claude) produce competent first drafts for standard technical documentation, release notes, and how-to guides. Routine content generation demand is shrinking significantly. However, senior technical writers owning developer experience, information architecture, API documentation strategy, and complex regulated documentation retain strong value — AI assists rather than replaces them at the senior level.

Burnout Causes

Being deprioritised relative to engineering in product teamsKeeping up with rapid product changes across multiple teamsDocumentation debt accumulation in fast-moving startups

Physical Health Risks

Sedentary screen workEye strain from extensive document review

Mental Health Risks

Documentation being deprioritised or deleted without consultationFeeling undervalued relative to engineering peers

How to Mitigate

  • Move up into developer experience (DevX) ownership — API docs strategy, docs-as-code tooling, information architecture
  • Specialise in regulated documentation (medical device, aviation, pharmaceutical) where AI cannot replace human accountability
  • Develop adjacent skills: UX writing, product content design, or developer relations
