A Day in the Life
Systems / Network Administrators maintain server infrastructure and network connectivity — configuring hardware, managing software, monitoring performance, and ensuring the IT backbone of an organisation operates reliably.
- Administer and maintain server operating systems (Windows/Linux)
- Monitor and troubleshoot network equipment (routers, switches, firewalls)
- Manage user accounts, access rights, and group policies
- Perform regular system backups and test disaster recovery procedures
- Apply security patches and maintain system hardening
- Document network diagrams and system configurations
- Respond to helpdesk escalations for infrastructure-related issues
Work Environment
Corporate IT environment. Mix of data centre, server room, and office desk work. On-call for critical system outages.
Typical hours: 47h/week · WLB score 6/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
On-call standard for critical infrastructure organisations. Generally manageable in well-staffed teams.
