About This Role
Grades cinnamon, pepper, cloves, cardamom, and nutmeg against SLS (Sri Lanka Standards) and customer-specific specifications. Tests moisture content, volatile oil content, and appearance. Works at exporters and at the Spice & Allied Products Bureau (SAPB). SAPB certification is required for export-grade spice grading. Key employers: Lak Cinnamon, Adamjee Lukmanjee, Exotic Lanka Spices.
A Day in the Life
Inspect and grade spices (cinnamon, pepper, cloves, cardamom, nutmeg) for export quality compliance at processing facilities or export companies, ensuring adherence to SLSI and buyer specifications.
- Visually inspect spice batches for colour, appearance, foreign matter, and pest damage
- Collect samples for moisture content testing and send to laboratory
- Grade spices according to SLSI and export market specifications
- Prepare inspection reports and certificates of conformity
- Reject non-compliant lots and recommend corrective processing
- Monitor sorting and cleaning processes on the processing line
- Liaise with EDB and Spice Council inspectors on export certification
Work Environment
Spice processing and storage facilities in Negombo, Matara, Ambalangoda, and Colombo port export zones. Requires sensory sensitivity for spice quality assessment.
Typical hours: 45h/week · WLB score 7/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Structured working hours. Some travel to processing facilities outside Colombo. Generally good work-life balance.
