About This Role
Teaching Sanskrit grammar and literature in schools and Pirivenas.
A Day in the Life
You teach Sanskrit language and literature at school or university level, developing students' proficiency in classical Sanskrit grammar, text reading, and understanding of Sanskrit's significance in Buddhist, Hindu, and classical Sri Lankan literature.
- Deliver Sanskrit grammar lessons covering sandhi, vibhakti, dhatu (verb roots), and sentence structure
- Guide students in reading and translating classical Sanskrit texts (Kalidasa, Panini's Ashtadhyayi, Buddhist Sanskrit)
- Prepare students for O/L and A/L Sanskrit examinations or university-level Sanskrit modules
- Teach the historical and cultural significance of Sanskrit in South Asian civilisation
- Set and mark translation exercises, grammar drills, and essay responses
- Conduct comparative analysis of Sanskrit and Pali (relevant for Buddhist studies)
- Engage in Sanskrit academic reading and scholarship to maintain content expertise
- Collaborate with Hindu and Buddhist studies departments where applicable
Work Environment
Classroom at a government school, national school, or university. Sanskrit is offered at A/L level in Sri Lanka (under Classical Language options) and at university level — most prominently at the University of Kelaniya (the leading Sri Lankan institution for Sanskrit studies) and University of Colombo. Interest is primarily from students pursuing Hindu studies, classical literature, and academic research.
