Metrology engineering is for people who are fascinated by precision — the science of measuring correctly. You ensure that the scales, thermometers, and instruments used in manufacturing actually measure what they claim to. It is deeply technical, highly standards-driven work that is invisible when done right and catastrophic when done wrong.

About This Role

Uses advanced measurement tools like CMM and 3D scanners to ensure products meet high-precision standards.

A Day in the Life

You develop and maintain measurement standards, calibrate precision instruments, and ensure that quality measurement systems meet national and international standards in manufacturing or industrial settings.

  • Calibrate and certify precision measurement instruments (gauges, balances, thermometers)
  • Maintain the calibration management system and certificate database
  • Develop and review measurement uncertainty calculations
  • Conduct internal audits of laboratory measurement systems against ISO 17025
  • Investigate measurement discrepancies and equipment failures
  • Liaise with SLSI (Sri Lanka Standards Institution) and NAQDA for accreditation
  • Train production staff on correct use of measuring instruments
  • Prepare metrology reports and calibration schedules

Work Environment

LABTeam: SMALLUNIFORMRemote: NONE

Precision laboratory and manufacturing floor environment. Work is conducted in temperature-controlled calibration labs and on factory floors. In Sri Lanka, found in manufacturing companies (CEB, Ceylon Electricity Board testing labs), the Board of Investment manufacturing zones, CIC, and industrial testing laboratories.

Typical hours: 45h/week · WLB score 7/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime

Structured shift pattern in manufacturing environments. Occasional overtime for urgent calibration work ahead of production deadlines.
