Project estimator

Project estimators determine whether construction companies win work profitably or not — making the role commercially critical. In Sri Lanka's active construction sector, experienced estimators with RICS qualification and BIM skills are valuable assets. The career offers office-based analytical work with strong overseas mobility. The key challenge ahead is staying ahead of AI-assisted takeoff tools by developing higher-value commercial judgement skills.

A Day in the Life

Prepares accurate cost estimates and tender pricing for construction and engineering projects in Sri Lanka — quantifying materials, labour, plant, and overheads to produce competitive and commercially viable bids.

  • Study architectural and engineering drawings to understand scope and identify quantities
  • Prepare detailed Bills of Quantities (BOQs) — measure and price all work items
  • Research current market rates for materials (cement, steel, timber, MEP items)
  • Obtain sub-contractor and supplier quotations for specialist trades and materials
  • Build up unit rates for labour, plant, and material for each work item
  • Prepare the full tender pricing summary including preliminaries, overheads, and margin
  • Attend pre-tender site visits and meetings to understand site conditions
  • Analyse post-tender results to improve future estimate accuracy

Work Environment

OFFICETeam: SMALLBUSINESS CASUALRemote: MEDIUM

Office-based role in construction and engineering companies, quantity surveying firms, and MEP contractors across Sri Lanka. The project estimator works under deadline pressure during tender periods — typically 2–4 weeks for mid-size projects, shorter for competitive fast-track tenders. Close coordination with procurement, design, and commercial teams. Most estimators in Sri Lanka are embedded within contracting companies rather than independent consulting QS practices.

Typical hours: 50h/week · WLB score 6/10 · COMMON overtime

Tender deadlines create intense periods of overtime. Outside tender periods, hours are more regular. The role is largely office-based with some site visits, offering better physical comfort than site-based engineering roles.

MEDIUM

Job Security (SL)

MEDIUM

AI-assisted quantity takeoff (BIM-based automated measurement) is already reducing manual takeoff time significantly. Estimators who master BIM-integrated estimating tools will remain relevant, but pure manual takeoff roles face automation pressure.

Burnout Causes

Tender deadline pressure requiring sustained concentrationBlame when tenders are lost due to pricing errorsSimultaneous multiple tender submissions in busy periods

Physical Health Risks

Sedentary office work — prolonged computer useEye strain from detailed drawing review

Mental Health Risks

High-stakes accuracy requirement — errors affect company profitabilityPressure from commercial management on tender margins

How to Mitigate

  • Always allow contingency for risk items in the estimate
  • Obtain fixed-price supplier quotes before submitting tender
  • Use historical cost data to sense-check unit rates
  • Master BIM and estimating software to stay ahead of automation
