Power Plant Operations Engineer

Power Plant Operations Engineering is for those who want the security of knowing their role is absolutely essential — no one turns off the power station. If you find satisfaction in mastering the operation of large, complex machinery, can handle the responsibility of keeping a national grid asset running, and accept the shift work trade-off, CEB offers one of the most secure engineering careers in Sri Lanka. Gulf opportunities for experienced plant operators are also very attractive financially. The main sacrifice is your sleep cycle and social life — be honest with yourself about whether shift-based work suits your life.

About This Role

Oversees the daily operations of power generation units (Thermal, Hydro, or Bio-mass) to ensure efficiency and safety.

A Day in the Life

Operate, monitor, and maintain electricity generating plant — ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient power generation from thermal, hydro, or renewable energy sources to meet grid dispatch requirements.

  • Monitor plant operating parameters — generation output, fuel consumption, turbine temperatures, generator voltages
  • Control and adjust plant output to match CEB National Control Centre dispatch orders
  • Conduct daily equipment checks — turbines, generators, transformers, auxiliary systems
  • Investigate and respond to plant alarms and equipment trips
  • Coordinate planned maintenance outages with National Control Centre and maintenance teams
  • Maintain shift logs and prepare daily generation performance reports
  • Supervise fuel management — heavy oil, coal, or natural gas supply and storage
  • Implement plant operating procedures and emergency response protocols

Work Environment

FIELDTeam: MEDIUMUNIFORMRemote: NONE

Power generation facilities — CEB thermal power stations (Kelanitissa, Sapugaskanda, Norochcholai Coal Power Plant), mini-hydro plants, and private Independent Power Producers (IPPs). The role is shift-based 24/7 — power generation does not stop. CEB is the dominant employer. Private IPPs (ACL Cables, Vidullanka for hydro, Laugfs for gas) are growing employers.

Typical hours: 48h/week · WLB score 4/10 · COMMON overtime

Rotating 3-shift system (morning/evening/night) significantly disrupts sleep patterns and social life. Night shifts are physically demanding. The trade-off is high job security and — in CEB — a generous public sector pension.

Burnout Risk

HIGH

Job Security (SL)

VERY HIGH

Plant control automation continues to advance, but human operators remain essential for anomaly response, emergency decision-making, and physical equipment intervention. Fully autonomous power plant operation is not achievable in the foreseeable future.

Burnout Causes

Rotating night shift health impacts over yearsEmergency response pressure during plant tripsMonotony of routine monitoring interspersed with high-stress emergenciesSeparation from social and family life due to shift patterns

Physical Health Risks

Shift work causing circadian rhythm disruption and long-term health effectsNoise exposure in turbine and boiler hallsHeat in generator rooms and boiler areasChemical and fuel exposure in thermal plant environments

Mental Health Risks

Shift work isolation and social disconnectionHigh-pressure emergency response responsibilityLong-term impact of irregular sleep on mental wellbeing

How to Mitigate

  • Strictly follow permit-to-work and LOTO procedures at all times
  • Know your emergency shutdown procedures by memory
  • Never bypass safety interlocks — plant trips are preferable to injury
  • Manage shift work health — prioritise sleep and exercise consistently
  • Seek medical monitoring for long-term shift work health impacts
