Panel wiring is the hidden craft behind every industrial control system in Sri Lanka. When a factory runs without electrical faults, it is partly because a skilled panel wirer did their job precisely and correctly. It is a clean, indoor, technical trade with real craft pride — a well-wired panel is something to be genuinely proud of. For those who value precision, a professional environment, and the growing field of industrial automation, this is a solid and secure technical trade with a natural progression toward field commissioning work.

A Day in the Life

Assembles and wires electrical control panels, distribution boards, motor control centres (MCCs), and automation panels in a workshop environment — producing finished panels ready for installation and commissioning at industrial and commercial sites in Sri Lanka.

  • Read and interpret panel wiring diagrams, single-line diagrams, and terminal schedules
  • Mount components on DIN rail inside panels — circuit breakers, contactors, relays, PLCs, VSDs, meters
  • Run and dress cable ducts, form cable looms, and route wiring neatly between components
  • Terminate wires at component terminals, terminal blocks, and cable glands
  • Label all wires with ferrule numbers matching the wiring diagram
  • Wire earthing bars and PE (protective earth) connections throughout the panel
  • Perform continuity and insulation resistance tests on completed panel before dispatch
  • Assist electrical engineers with Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) before panel shipment

Work Environment

INDOORTeam: MEDIUMUNIFORMRemote: NONE

Panel manufacturing and electrical workshops of MEP contractors, panel builders, and industrial automation companies across Sri Lanka — primarily in Colombo, Gampaha, and near FTZ areas. Clean, indoor workshop environment. Panel wiring is precision work — a well-wired panel has straight, neatly routed wiring with consistent ferrule labelling that matches the drawings exactly. Companies building panels for export or multinational industrial clients often require IEC-compliant workmanship.

Typical hours: 45h/week · WLB score 7/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime

Workshop-based role with standard daytime hours. Overtime during project delivery peaks when panels must be completed and tested for dispatch. No shift work. Pleasant indoor working environment.

  • Control panel assembly sub-contractor for MEP and automation companies

Side Income Ideas

Distribution board wiring for domestic electricians who sub-contract panel workFreelance panel wiring inspection and testing

Panel manufacturing is a realistic business for experienced panel wirers. Small panel shops can sub-contract work from larger MEP firms and supply distribution boards to residential and commercial electrical contractors.

Risks & Challenges

Burnout Risk

Job Security (SL)

MEDIUM

Automated wire cutting, stripping, and ferrule crimping machines are used by large panel builders for high-volume standard wiring. Custom, complex automation panels still require skilled human wirers. Panel complexity is increasing (more PLCs, VSDs, HMIs), which increases the skill requirement.

Burnout Causes

Repetitive precision wiring creating hand and eye fatiguePressure during pre-FAT panel completion deadlinesErrors in wiring causing rework and re-testing delays

Physical Health Risks

Eye strain from reading fine wiring diagrams and labellingHand repetitive strain from wire stripping, termination, and ferrule crimpingBack strain from bending over panels during wiring

Mental Health Risks

Pressure when wiring errors are found during FAT testing

How to Mitigate

  • Never energise a panel without confirming wiring completion and insulation test
  • Follow the drawing — never improvise wiring routes not shown in the diagram
  • Torque all terminals to specification — undertorqued connections cause future failures
  • Label every wire before termination — not after
