Operates commercial offset printing machines (Heidelberg, Komori, Ryobi) for books, magazines, packaging, and commercial printing. Key employers: Printcare PLC (Hayley's Group — listed), The Colombo Apothecaries printing, Government Publications Bureau, and private commercial printers in Colombo. NVQ Level 3/4 in printing technology available through TVEC.
A Day in the Life
An Offset Print Machine Operator's day revolves around setting up, operating, and maintaining large-scale offset printing presses. This includes loading paper, mixing and adjusting inks, monitoring print quality, making adjustments during runs, and performing routine maintenance. They ensure that print jobs are completed accurately, efficiently, and to the required quality standards.
- Setting up offset printing machines according to job specifications (e.g., plate mounting, ink adjustments)
- Loading paper stock and other materials onto the press
- Mixing and adjusting ink colors to match client specifications (Pantone, CMYK)
- Monitoring the printing process for quality, color consistency, and registration accuracy
- Making adjustments to machine settings during print runs to correct any imperfections
- Performing routine maintenance and cleaning of the printing press
- Troubleshooting minor mechanical issues and performing basic repairs
- Recording production data, including quantities printed and materials used
- Collaborating with pre-press and finishing departments to ensure smooth workflow
- Ensuring adherence to safety protocols and operating procedures
