About This Role
Uses CAD/CAE tools to create blueprints and 3D models for mechanical parts and complex machinery.
A Day in the Life
Lead the end-to-end mechanical design of complex engineering systems — from concept through detailed design and manufacturing release — ensuring performance, reliability, and manufacturability requirements are met.
- Lead concept development and design reviews for mechanical systems or products
- Create and manage 3D CAD assemblies and detailed component drawings with GD&T
- Perform or commission structural, thermal, and dynamic FEA analyses to validate designs
- Define and validate materials, surface treatments, and manufacturing processes
- Manage design project schedule — tracking milestones from concept to released drawings
- Coordinate with suppliers for DFM feedback and manufacturing feasibility input
- Maintain design history files and ensure change management compliance
- Support prototype builds, testing, and design validation activities
Work Environment
Mid-to-senior mechanical design role found in product development companies, engineering consultancies, and industrial equipment manufacturers. In Sri Lanka, most such roles are in the FTZ manufacturing sector or with international companies that have Sri Lanka design centres.
