Industrial electricians are the backbone of manufacturing in Sri Lanka — without them, factories stop. The role combines technical depth with hands-on problem solving and carries real responsibility. For those who enjoy working with their hands, understanding complex systems, and want strong domestic and overseas job prospects, this is a highly secure and rewarding trade. The trade-off is a demanding environment with genuine physical danger that requires uncompromising safety discipline.”
A Day in the Life
Installs, tests, and maintains electrical systems in industrial facilities — factories, power plants, and processing plants — working on 3-phase power, motor control centres, variable speed drives, and industrial instrumentation.
- Read and interpret electrical drawings, P&IDs, and wiring schematics for industrial installations
- Install MCC (motor control centre) feeders, power and control cabling in cable trays and conduits
- Terminate cables at distribution boards, MCC panels, and field instruments
- Test electrical circuits — insulation resistance, continuity, earth loop impedance
- Commission VSD (variable speed drive) units and motor starters per commissioning procedures
- Carry out lockout/tagout (LOTO) before working on live electrical equipment
- Diagnose and repair faults in 3-phase motors, starters, and control circuits
- Complete daily work permits and electrical isolation records
Work Environment
Industrial plants, free trade zone factories, cement works, textile mills, food processing plants, and power generation facilities across Sri Lanka. Physical environments include machine rooms, cable basement areas, switchrooms, and outdoor cable routes. Work in FTZ (Katunayake, Biyagama, Koggala) and industrial zones (Horana, Seethawaka) is common.
Typical hours: 48h/week · WLB score 5/10 · COMMON overtime
Shift-based rosters in continuous-process plants (cement, food processing) require weekend and night shift work. Overtime is common during plant shutdowns and new installation phases. FTZ factory electricians typically work 5.5–6 day weeks.

How to Mitigate
- Never work on live electrical systems without a valid permit-to-work
- Apply LOTO on all energy sources before commencing work
- Wear arc flash-rated PPE when working near energised panels
- Test for voltage with a calibrated tester before touching any conductor
Is This Career For You?
O/L students with strong Physics and Mathematics interest who prefer practical, hands-on work over academic study. Those who want a trade with clear NVQ progression, strong FTZ factory employment, and the option to work overseas in the Gulf. Not suited to those who dislike confined spaces or physical environments.
