About This Role
The Grama Niladhari (GN) is the most grassroots-level civil servant, responsible for a defined GN Division. Duties include civil registration, poverty alleviation administration, land surveys, issuing of certificates, and community-level dispute resolution.
A Day in the Life
A Grama Niladhari's day is highly dynamic and community-focused, involving a wide range of administrative, social, and regulatory duties within their assigned GN Division. They are the primary point of contact between the government and the citizens.
- Issue various certificates (residence, character, income, etc.) to residents.
- Conduct inquiries and prepare reports for land disputes, public complaints, and legal matters.
- Coordinate and implement government development and welfare programs (e.g., Samurdhi).
- Maintain civil registers, population data, and electoral rolls.
- Assist in disaster management and emergency relief efforts.
- Facilitate community meetings and resolve local disputes.
- Liaise with other government departments (Police, Health, Education) on local issues.
- Conduct surveys and collect data for government planning and policy formulation.
Work Environment
Work is primarily field-based within the assigned GN Division, involving frequent visits to homes, community centers, and local government offices.
