A Day in the Life
A GIS Data Manager oversees the entire lifecycle of geospatial data, ensuring its accuracy, security, and accessibility. Their day involves designing database structures, implementing data quality control, managing data updates, and providing technical support to GIS users within an organization.
- Design, implement, and maintain geospatial databases (e.g., PostGIS, Esri Geodatabases)
- Develop and enforce data quality standards and validation procedures
- Manage data acquisition, integration, and conversion from various sources
- Implement data security protocols and access controls for sensitive geographic information
- Oversee regular data updates, backups, and archival processes
- Provide technical support and training to GIS users on data best practices
- Document metadata for all geospatial datasets
- Collaborate with IT teams to ensure optimal performance of GIS infrastructure
- Research and implement new data management technologies and strategies
Work Environment
