This role is for individuals with a deep passion for genetics and molecular biology, coupled with a strong drive for justice. It offers the unique opportunity to apply cutting-edge scientific techniques to solve crimes and uncover truth from DNA evidence. However, it demands meticulous precision, unwavering objectivity, and resilience to handle emotionally challenging cases and rigorous legal scrutiny.

About This Role

Analyzes DNA evidence from crime scenes to identify suspects or victims.

A Day in the Life

A Forensic DNA Analyst spends their day meticulously analyzing DNA evidence from various biological samples collected at crime scenes. This involves extracting DNA, performing amplification and profiling, comparing profiles to known samples or databases, and interpreting complex genetic data to identify individuals or link suspects to crimes.

  • Receiving, documenting, and preparing biological evidence for DNA analysis
  • Extracting DNA from various sample types (blood, saliva, hair, skin cells, bone)
  • Performing Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) to amplify specific DNA regions
  • Conducting Short Tandem Repeat (STR) analysis to generate DNA profiles
  • Analyzing and interpreting complex electropherograms and DNA profiles
  • Comparing generated DNA profiles to reference samples or national databases (e.g., CODIS)
  • Preparing comprehensive forensic DNA reports and presenting findings in court
  • Maintaining strict chain of custody and adhering to quality assurance standards
