A Day in the Life
A Flavor & Fragrance Chemist spends their day in a laboratory, creating and testing new aromatic compounds for various products. This involves researching raw materials, formulating new flavor or fragrance profiles, conducting sensory evaluations, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. It's a highly creative and scientific role.
- Research and source natural and synthetic raw materials for flavor and fragrance creation.
- Formulate new flavor and fragrance compounds for food, beverage, cosmetic, or household products.
- Conduct sensory evaluations (smell, taste) of new formulations and existing products.
- Perform analytical tests (e.g., GC-MS) to identify and quantify aromatic components.
- Ensure all formulations comply with food safety, cosmetic, and environmental regulations.
- Scale up successful formulations from lab to pilot plant and production.
- Collaborate with marketing, product development, and production teams.
- Maintain detailed records of experiments, formulations, and test results.
Work Environment
Primarily works in a laboratory setting, which is clean, well-ventilated, and equipped with specialized instruments. Involves handling various chemicals, essential oils, and food ingredients. Requires strict adherence to safety protocols and a keen sense of smell and taste.
