A Day in the Life
A Facilities Manager ensures that buildings and their services (e.g., electricity, water, security) operate efficiently, safely, and comfortably. Their day involves coordinating maintenance, managing budgets, overseeing contractors, and responding to operational issues to support the core business.
- Oversee the maintenance and repair of building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing)
- Manage facilities budgets, negotiate contracts with vendors and service providers
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations
- Coordinate space planning, office moves, and renovations
- Supervise facilities staff and external contractors
- Implement energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives
- Respond to emergency situations and resolve operational issues promptly
- Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs
- Manage security systems and access control for the premises
Work Environment
Primarily an office-based role within a commercial, industrial, or institutional building. Involves frequent interaction with staff, contractors, and management. The environment can be fast-paced, especially when responding to emergencies.
