If you are captivated by the science of natural products and want to apply chemistry to one of Sri Lanka's most storied export industries, extraction technology offers a unique and globally relevant career. Your work transforms humble spices into globally traded ingredients.”
About This Role
Operates advanced extraction systems to produce oleoresins and essential oils from plantation crops.
A Day in the Life
You develop, optimize, and oversee extraction processes for Sri Lankan spices (cinnamon, pepper, cardamom, cloves) and essential oils. Your work transforms raw agricultural produce into high-value extracts and oils for global food, fragrance, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.
- Operate and optimize solvent extraction, steam distillation, and CO2 extraction equipment
- Conduct laboratory analysis of extract quality (GC-MS, HPLC, organoleptic testing)
- Develop new extraction processes to improve yield and quality
- Monitor and maintain extraction plant equipment and safety systems
- Prepare technical specifications and process documentation
- Coordinate with procurement for raw spice quality and sourcing
- Test finished products against international export standards
- Implement HACCP and food safety protocols in the extraction facility
- Liaise with quality assurance team on batch release decisions
- Research emerging extraction technologies and sustainable methods
Work Environment
Primarily laboratory and production plant environments — working with extraction equipment, distillation columns, and analytical instruments. The environment involves spice aromas, solvents, and heat. Safety protocols (PPE, ventilation) are strictly observed. Some desk work for documentation and analysis.
Typical hours: 45h/week · WLB score 6/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Generally structured working hours in a production environment. Occasional overtime during high-demand production seasons (December–March for cinnamon harvest). Laboratory shifts may require early starts for distillation batch management.
