Downstream Processing (DSP) Lead
This role is for individuals passionate about the intricate science of purifying biological molecules, driven by the goal of producing life-saving biopharmaceuticals. It offers the satisfaction of solving complex engineering and biochemical challenges to bring innovative treatments to patients. However, it demands meticulous attention to detail, a deep understanding of bioprocessing principles, and the ability to work under strict regulatory and quality constraints.”
About This Role
Focuses on the purification and recovery of biological products from complex mixtures after fermentation.
A Day in the Life
A Downstream Processing (DSP) Lead manages the purification and recovery of biological products from fermentation broths or cell cultures. This involves designing and optimizing separation processes, ensuring product quality, and scaling up operations for commercial production.
- Designing and optimizing purification processes (e.g., chromatography, filtration, centrifugation)
- Leading a team of scientists and technicians in DSP operations
- Troubleshooting process deviations and implementing corrective actions
- Ensuring product quality and purity meet regulatory standards (e.g., GMP)
- Scaling up DSP processes from lab to pilot to commercial production
- Developing and validating analytical methods for in-process and final product testing
- Managing equipment maintenance and calibration for DSP units
- Preparing technical reports, batch records, and regulatory documentation
Work Environment
Work is primarily conducted in a bioprocessing laboratory or manufacturing plant, which is a controlled, cleanroom environment. It involves working with specialized equipment, biological materials, and chemicals, requiring strict adherence to safety and quality protocols.
Typical hours: 40h/week · WLB score 7/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime
Generally good work-life balance, but process development or troubleshooting can occasionally require extended hours.
