Design Engineer (Mechanical)

Mechanical Design Engineering is for those who love the process of translating an idea into a precise physical specification — and then seeing it manufactured. If you get satisfaction from a clean, well-toleranced 3D model or a perfectly detailed engineering drawing, this role delivers that satisfaction daily. In Sri Lanka the local market is developing, but skilled CAD designers with SolidWorks proficiency have genuine international freelance opportunity that can rival or exceed local salaries. The AI shift in design tools is real but creates opportunity for those who master the new tools early.

About This Role

Uses CAD software to design mechanical components and systems for various industries like automotive and aerospace.

A Day in the Life

Create detailed mechanical designs for products, machines, or industrial equipment — translating requirements into 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and specifications ready for manufacture or installation.

  • Create 3D models and detailed engineering drawings in SolidWorks, CATIA, or AutoCAD Mechanical
  • Perform engineering calculations — stress, fatigue, thermal, and dynamic analysis
  • Prepare Bills of Materials (BOM) for manufactured components and assemblies
  • Review and approve supplier drawings and manufacturing shop drawings
  • Coordinate design changes with manufacturing, procurement, and quality teams
  • Conduct design FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) on critical components
  • Select appropriate materials and surface treatments for design requirements
  • Support manufacturing and commissioning teams with design interpretation and modification

Work Environment

OFFICETeam: SMALLBUSINESS CASUALRemote: HIGH

Primarily office and workshop environment with periodic visits to manufacturing floor or client sites. In Sri Lanka, mechanical design engineers work in the FTZ manufacturing sector (apparel machinery, plastics, packaging), automotive sector (DIMO, Stafford Motor Company), industrial equipment companies, and engineering consulting firms. The role can be globally remote-friendly for experienced designers using international CAD platforms.

Typical hours: 45h/week · WLB score 7/10 · OCCASIONAL overtime

Predominantly office-based with reasonable hours. Project launch deadlines and design review cycles create periodic overtime. One of the better work-life balance profiles in engineering.
