GCE A/L — Commerce or Technology Stream

A/L Commerce (Accounting, Business Studies) or Technology stream. Mathematics is important. Some universities also accept Physical Science stream students. Aim for university or private institute entry.

BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying — RICS Accredited

4-year RICS-accredited degree from University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJP — most affordable), SLIIT, or NSBM. RICS accreditation means graduates can proceed directly to APC (Assessment of Professional Competence) for MRICS status. Private university fees: LKR 1.5–3M.

Graduate Quantity Surveyor

First 2 years in a QS consultancy or contracting company — preparing BOQs, interim valuations, and variation orders under supervision. Key employers: Maga Engineering, Access Engineering, Davis Langdon (Aecom Lanka), Currie & Brown Lanka.

RICS APC (Assessment of Professional Competence)

2-year structured training programme logging competencies in contract administration, cost management, procurement, and dispute resolution. Culminates in an RICS APC assessment interview. Upon passing, awarded MRICS (Member of RICS). IQSSL membership is the local equivalent.

Chartered Quantity Surveyor (MRICS / MIQSSL)

Chartered status opens senior roles in contract management, project cost consultancy, and claims arbitration. Monthly salary: LKR 150,000–320,000 locally. Overseas opportunities in UK, Australia, Middle East at USD 60,000–100,000/year. Very high demand in Port City and infrastructure projects.
